This one is mostly for fun. We divide the time left by an average year of 365.25 days. After Christmas Day passes, the count resets to just under one year.

Why count Christmas in years?
Counting years until Christmas is mostly for fun, since Christmas is always less than a year away. The number above divides the time left by an average year of 365.25 days. In late October it is a small fraction; on 26 December it jumps back up to about 0.997 years.
It does have one real use: it shows at a glance how much of the year is left before Christmas. Under 0.25 means less than three months. Under 0.1 means you are inside the last five weeks.

Christmas through the centuries
Christmas has been celebrated on 25 December in the West since at least the 4th century, so this year's countdown is one of more than 1,600. The modern features are much newer: decorated trees spread from Germany in the 1500s, the first commercial Christmas card was printed in 1843, and electric tree lights arrived in 1882. Long countdowns: from one Christmas to the next
On Boxing Day the countdown starts again with 364 days to go, or 365 when a leap day falls in between. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday, so the countdown from 26 December 2026 to 25 December 2027 is exactly 364 days. Because 2028 includes 29 February, the wait from Christmas 2027 to Christmas 2028 is 366 days.
Some people like to count much further ahead, such as how many years until a child's first Christmas at school, or until a family reunion. Simply subtract this year from that year; each full year adds one more Christmas.
