How we count fortnights
A fortnight comes from the old English for fourteen nights. It is a handy unit if you are paid every two weeks: the whole number is roughly how many paydays you have before Christmas.
Pair it with the budget planner to spread gift costs across each pay period.
| From midnight on | Time left until Christmas 2026 |
|---|---|
| Sunday 1 November 2026 | 3.86 fortnights |
| Sunday 15 November 2026 | 2.86 fortnights |
| Friday 27 November 2026 | 2.00 fortnights |
| Tuesday 1 December 2026 | 1.71 fortnights |
| Tuesday 15 December 2026 | 0.71 fortnights |
| Thursday 24 December 2026 | 0.07 fortnights |

What is a fortnight?
A fortnight is fourteen days, or two weeks. The word is a squashed form of the Old English for "fourteen nights", and it is everyday language in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, even if it is less common in the US.
The number above shows how many fortnights until Christmas, to two decimal places. With a little over four fortnights to go in late October, that is four two-week blocks before the big day.
Fortnights and paydays
Many people are paid fortnightly, so fortnights until Christmas is a quick way to answer a more useful question: how many paydays until Christmas? Round the number down and you have roughly the paydays left, depending on where your payday falls.
A simple plan:
- Decide your total Christmas spend in the budget planner.
- Divide it by the paydays left. That is your amount to set aside each fortnight.
- Spend the first fortnights on things that need shipping, and the last one on food.
Four fortnights, four jobs
With about four fortnights left, here is one tidy way to split the work:
- Fortnight one: lists, budget, travel and personalised gifts.
- Fortnight two: Black Friday and Cyber Monday, decorations up when Advent starts on 29 November.
- Fortnight three: cards, wrapping, and posting before the shipping deadlines.
- Fortnight four: food, school holidays and Christmas Eve.

Fortnights in the Christmas calendar
The fortnight is an old unit with a festive history. Many British and Commonwealth employers still pay fortnightly, and school terms in several countries are planned in fortnights. Two fortnights before Christmas 2026 is Friday 11 December, often the week of school nativity plays and office parties. One fortnight before is Friday 18 December, the last Friday before Christmas.
The twelve days of Christmas, from 25 December to 5 January, also make a little under one fortnight, so the season itself lasts almost exactly as long as one of the units on this page.
Fortnights from key dates
- From 1 November: about 3.86 fortnights
- From Black Friday, 27 November: exactly 2 fortnights
