The day is named after St Valentine, an early Christian martyr whose feast day was 14 February. The link with romance came much later: the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer connected Valentine's Day with love birds choosing their mates in the 14th century. Handwritten valentines were popular by the 1700s, and printed cards spread in the 1800s. In the US, Esther Howland began selling elaborate lace valentines in the 1840s.

In Japan, women traditionally give chocolate to men on 14 February, and men return the favour a month later on White Day, 14 March. In South Korea, 14 April is "Black Day" for singles, who eat black-bean noodles together. In Wales, many couples celebrate St Dwynwen's Day on 25 January instead. In Brazil, the romantic day is 12 June.
